Dialogue Forum

(Podium in the foyer of the Central Library)

Sustainable development: what is that? What can we, indeed what must we do ourselves?
In the dialogue forum, experts will make us aware of our responsibility for tomorrow's world and will invite visitors to join in their discussions.

The Topics

Economy: "The right strategy for sustainability"
Prof. Dr. Georg Müller-Christ (University of Bremen, Sustainable Management) will draw up a list together with the audience and create a ‘picture’ to illustrate how varied the different aspects of sustainability can be.
'If we want to make room in our own lives for new necessities then this sometimes means we have to shift our ingrained habits around a bit. We must sure there's enough room for sustainability!'

Ecology: "Bioeconomy and conservation of resources"
Prof. Dr. Karin Holm-Müller (University of Bonn, Institute for Food and Resource Economics) will talk to Prof. Dr. Ulrich Schurr (Forschungszentrum Jülich) about the bioeconomy and the conservation of resources.
'I regard the protection of our natural environment as an ethical obligation. However, I am also convinced that for purely economic reasons it is imperative to use natural resources sustainably.' (Prof. Holm-Müller)
'The world is really quite simple, it is only made to seem complicated. In the same way, research opens up great opportunities – sustainable bioeconomy needs research for the real world.' (Prof. Schurr)

Social sphere: "It’s never too early or too late for sustainability!"
Prof. Dr. Ute Stoltenberg (Leuphana University Lüneburg, Institute of Integrative Studies) will speak about education for sustainable development.
'Sustainable development is a mission we can all take part in – for acceptable present conditions and a future worth living. We all need to be educated in sustainable development – and there are already good examples in all fields of life – from kindergartens to universities and even mayors who have made plans for the sustainable future of their communities. I would like to show you what this searching, learning and shaping process involves – and perhaps persuade you to join in!'

A changing society: "Sustainable development and transforming the energy sector"
Prof. Dr. Christoph Buchal will speak about "Transforming the German Energy Sector - a Gigawatt Revolution"
'We can't discuss the transformation of the energy sector without giving any figures.'

Interview with Prof. Dr. Jürgen-Friedrich Hake (Forschungszentrum Jülich) and Martin Czakainski (publicist and journalist, etv GmbH, Essen) on sustainable development and the transformation of the energy sector.
'The more complex the system, the more dangerous the desire for action and decisions at all costs, and systems analysis without mathematics is like French cuisine with no wine.' (Prof. Hake)

Health
Junior Professor Dr. Birgit Strodel (Forschungszentrum Jülich) will speak in an accessible way about Alzheimer’s disease and research activities in this area at Forschungszentrum Jülich.
'My research work is devoted to helping to discover the as yet unknown cause of Alzheimer's so that we will be able to cure this disease one day. Together with my colleagues at Forschungszentrum Jülich, we want to develop new ways of diagnosing and treating Alzheimer's which will improve the quality of life of those affected and their families.'
